CHAPTER 19

Worries

Every night, Frank’s offered dinner to the hearty appetites of Pinehearth. Besides eating alone at Angus’s house, I preferred Frank’s to the other taverns. Frank led us to a small table in the corner. Naira and Angus sat across from each other. I hesitated for a heartbeat before squeezing onto the bench next to Angus. There would’ve been more room with Naira. As it was, my arm and thigh pressed against Angus’s. It seemed a long time ago that I’d sat with him at Cromarty the night before Trista’s death, keeping the fabric of my puffy skirt from brushing him.

“We’ve got lake trout tonight and pheasant pie.” Frank’s chapped hands rested on his wide belly.

“Trout please,” Naira said.

“Pheasant,” Angus said.

Frank nodded as if he’d expected as much. He looked at me, and I sent him a tight smile. “Red beans again?”

“Yes, please.”

He ambled off, picking up empty plates from a nearby table on his way to the kitchen.

“What have you heard from yer da?” Naira asked me.

“Nothing.”

Her mouth turned down.

I squirmed like a bug under glass. “I learned from my sister that the vaccine is transportable as long as it’s kept cold. Three hours or so. Lanie isn’t in the red velvet laboratory anymore. My father moved her team out.”

“Why?”

“I wish I knew.”

“Find out what more you can from Lanie,” Naira ordered.

I intended to. I swallowed the lump in my throat and nodded, hoping to prove my worth and trustworthiness to this woman while discovering my father’s perfidy.

She turned to Angus. “Ye won’t be returning to Campbell without your father. I heard word from him this afternoon.” Angus leaned forward at the tightness in her tone. “He’s delayed in Porto, checking on defenses.”

Were the Churrys really coming? The bloodthirsty tribes lived across the Katrine Ocean to the south of Porto and Hogg.

“He felt confident in Hogg’s progress,” Angus said. “They’ve built watchtowers from the cliffs. Although the Churrys would be unwise to attack at Hogg. They’ll hit the weaker harbors at Porto.”

I puffed in pride for Ian and Emilia’s country. Hoggs were strong and hardworking, despite the Grays’ harshness. I stopped myself. The Grays didn’t kill Emilia. I’d believed Angus when he told me that, but I was having a hard time accepting the truth. I’d been certain Angus was Emilia’s murderer for so long. Without that sure knowledge, I had nothing to hold on to to keep my anger alive.

I’d been blind long enough. I could no longer deny that the Grays were not the tyrannical savages Ian had described them to be. My heart sagged, limp and gutted. What now?

A young woman brought three steaming plates, and my stomach nearly sang in delight. I burned my tongue in my rush to assuage my hunger.

Angus speared a piece of meat. “Da’s going to want to station a unit in NewGate.”

Naira nodded, her expression tight at hearing they were sending soldiers to Porto.

My thoughts were a jumble. I didn’t want Glenn soldiers trampling through the conquered domains, living off our means, but the thought of Churry attacking Hogg or Porto cooled my indignations.
